A man after God's own heart

Psalm 103 is one of the Psalms of the Bible that I have highlighted almost every verse. It lifts my spirit as I praise Him with the wonderful words of King David; “a man after God’s own heart.” I don’t know what you think, but that is what we all should want the Lord to be able to say about us; that we are a man or woman after God’s own heart. Let us look at a few of the verses and see if they do not lift our spirit and give us a desire to praise Him today!

“Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities. Who heals all your diseases. Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies. Who satisfies your mouth with good things. So that your youth is renewed like the eagles.” (Psalms 103:1-5)

“As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; As the flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And the place remembers it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember to keep His commandments.” (Psalms 103: 12-18)

“Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word. Bless the LORD, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul!” (Psalms 103: 20,22)

Read the whole Psalm if you have time and spend time thanking Him for saving your soul and allowing you to be adopted as his son or daughter. Thank Him for His mercies and loving-kindness everyday.

Pray that:
1.     God will be glorified in all that you say and do today.
2.     God will fill you with His spirit and guide all your actions today.
3.     God will be with the staff of our church today and that a spirit of unity under the leadership of the Holy Spirit will permeate everything they do.
4.     God will be with our Sunday School teachers and Small Group leaders as they prepare their lessons for the upcoming Sunday.

Forgiveness, the cure for bitterness and hate

“Love your enemies  ‘You have heard it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,” (Matthew 5:43-44, NKJV)

Ernest Gordon was a soldier, an Infantry company commander, in the 93rd Highlanders (The Argylls), of the British Army during World War II. He and his battalion commander were the last to cross the causeway from Singapore to the mainland before the causeway was blown up leaving Singapore in the hands of the invading Japanese in January 1942. The story of his attempt to escape with a handful of other soldiers on a local fishing boat from the Malay Peninsula, across the Indian Ocean to India, is an adventure story that should, by itself, make a riveting and exciting movie that I would love to see. Sadly, it did not end well, as they were captured by a Japanese warship about two thirds of the way to their destination. But as that famous radio announcer Paul Harvey used to say; “now the rest of the story.”

In his book “Miracle on the River Kwai” Captain Gordon tells the story of how desperate men, in the worst possible conditions, cruelly mistreated by the Japanese, and forced to work day after day with poor food and water, built the China to Burma railroad for the Japanese in the heart of the Burmese jungle. The record of the Japanese and their treatment of POW’s is well documented and was in total violation of the Geneva Convention, which their nation had signed. Anyone who has seen the movie or read the book “Unbroken” which chronicles the story of Louis Zamperini as a Japanese POW knows a little bit about how allied prisoners were abused and mistreated by their captors.

But now the story gets exciting, as we read of how a handful of allied POW’s decided they would not join in the natural inclination to look out only for their own needs and took it upon themselves to give of themselves for their fellow man. Two men rescued Captain Gordon from the death tent, where he had been sent to die from diphtheria, and nursed him back to health, giving all of their meager resources and giving him daily massages to his emaciated arms and legs so that he was able to recover.

Then shortly after he had recovered, Gordon was asked to lead a Bible study, and although he had had no formal training and was a nominal Christian at best, was soon leading others in the truth of the Scriptures and the entire camp became on fire for Jesus and His word! They took care of each other first and learned to love one another no matter whether the person deserved love or not. They even came to care for and love their Japanese captors! Captain Gordon tells the story of a time when they were being moved from one POW camp to another by train and as they were stopped along the route there was a train full of wounded Japanese soldiers that had no one caring for them.

Here is how he described what happened: “The wounded Japanese looked at us forlornly as they sat waiting for death. They had been discarded as expendable, the refuse of war. They were the enemy. They were more cowed and defeated than we had ever been. Without a word most of the officers in my section unbuckled their packs, took part of their rations and a rag or two, and with water canteens in their hands, went over to the Japanese train. Our guards tried to stop us, bawling, ‘No goodka! No goodka!’ But we ignored them and knelt down by the enemy to give water and food, to clean and bind up their wounds. Grateful cries of, ‘Arigato!’ (‘Thank you!’) followed us when we left. ‘What fools you are!’ an Allied officer called from another section of the train. ‘Have you never heard the story of the Good Samaritan?’ I asked him.” (Miracle on the River Kwai by Ernest Gordon)

Dr. Ernest Gordon was so profoundly changed by his conversion to Christ in the jungles of Burma that he surrendered his life to the ministry when he returned to England and later served as the Dean of the Chapel at Princeton University in the U.S., and was President of the Creed House, a Christian rescue effort for the emancipation of the political dissidents from Iron Curtain countries in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

So our question we might ask ourselves today is, “how well am I doing with this loving my enemies stuff?” Who am I mad at today? Who have I been warring with for quite a while now? Who aggravates me every time they open their mouths or just pass me by? These British and other allied POW’s were able to forgive their Japanese guards and tormentors. They were able to “love their enemies” with a love that does not come from our fleshly selves. It can only come from the Holy Spirit that lives within each born-again believer. Allow Him to take control or your anger and hate. Forgive! Love! The one who will benefit the most is you! And your Heavenly Father will be very pleased with you! The angels will sing a new song in your honor! You will be a different person, and a new creation!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV)

"Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and then remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift at the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled  to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. (Matthew 5:23-24, NKJV)

   Pray
1.     Dear God help me to love my enemies. Help me to go to someone today and tell them that I love them and am praying for them.
2.     That I will be bold in asking forgiveness from anyone I have wronged or anyone that I have harbored bad feelings for.
3.     That I will look for opportunities to do good for those who I have had bad run-ins with in the past and that I will do it with joy in my heart.
4.     That the people of my church will forgive one another as Christ has forgiven us.

Nehemiah's prayer

"The effective fervant prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. (James 5: 16b-18 NKJV)

In the book of Nehemiah we find one of the most awesome prayers in the Bible. We don’t know too much about Nehemiah except that he was in captivity in Persia, the son of Hachaliah, that his name in Hebrew meant “Comfort of Yahweh”, and that he was the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of the Persian Empire. One of his fellow Hebrews had recently returned from Jerusalem and had told him how the walls were torn down and the people were in great distress. Nehemiah was greatly upset to hear this news, He wept bitterly, and mourned for several days, with fasting and praying.

He cried out to God: “I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God. You who keep Your covenant and mercy to those who love You and observe Your commandments, please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before you now, day and night, for the children of Israel which have sinned against You. Both my father’s house and I have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which you commanded Your servant Moses. Remember, I pray the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations: but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of heavens, yet I will gather you from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling place for My name.’ Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. O Lord, I pray, please let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who desire to fear your name: and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.’ For I was the king’s cupbearer.” (Nehemiah 1:5-11)

What an awesome example for us to cry out to God with the same enthusiasm and sincerity that Nehemiah had in this heartfelt prayer! What has God put on your heart today? Do you have some of the same passion to petition God right now for the needs of your country, your  church, your family, and yourself right now? If so let us together bring these prayers before our Lord this day:

Pray that:

1.     God will bring into our remembrance the things we have done that we know we should not have done or we didn’t do that we know we should have done.
2.     We will be convicted of our sins of materialism, pride, indifference, laziness, impurity, lack of love, and selfishness.
3.     That God will forgive us as we are quick to forgive others who have sinned against us.
4.     Many will be faithful today in praying for the lost and for revival in our country in the coming weeks and months.

Hope Unseen

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23

What kind of trial are you going through right now? Is it problems with your marriage, finances, job search, rebellious children, certain members of your church, or maybe just a problem with sin in your life, something you have had to struggle with and have not been able to overcome. There is hope, and that hope is in the name of Jesus. He is the only One who can meet your needs in the big problems and the little ones. Let me tell you a short story about a man and his wife who had a tremendous battle to fight that had nothing to do with sin or normal problems but, with the help of Jesus, and their strong faith in Him to get them through, they were able to overcome and claim victory.

Scotty Smiley was a close friend of my son Adam at West Point. Along with Ed Graham and David Webb they did everything together as members of the Officer Christian Fellowship and as protestant Sunday School teachers. Any opportunity to get off campus and go to NYC or some other adventure you could find them together as the best of friends. Upon graduation, they went separate ways although David and Scotty managed to get assigned to the same unit and deployed to Iraq in 2004 both as Infantry platoon leaders in one of the Army's Stryker Brigades. (Unit was using armored wheeled vehicles called Strykers.)

In December of that year they were operating out of the city of Mosul in northern Iraq and had suffered the loss of their company commander  and other soldiers, to a suicide bomber who managed to gain entrance to the mess tent. Scotty had left the tent 5 minutes before the attack and David had been present but was unhurt. The next few days would not be so fortunate for Scotty.

Leading a patrol in the city two days later something happened that completely changed the life of Scotty in ways he and his wife could never have imagined. While on patrol in his Stryker, he spotted a car and driver acting in an erratic way as it came closer to the patrol. Scotty ordered the vehicle to stop and when it didn't he fired some rounds in front of it to warn it to come no closer. The driver stopped momentarily and then proceeded again. Before Scotty could fire again the man detonated a massive bomb rigged up in his car. Scotty was hit in the head with shrapnel and was an immediate casualty because he was in the hatch of the vehicle while the driver and soldiers inside the Stryker were unhurt except for minor concussion injuries.

Scotty was immediately evacuated to the nearest medical unit that quickly determined that they did not have the ability to properly take care of him. They fixed him up as best as they could and then evacuated him by airplane to Frankfort Germany. There they worked hard to keep him alive and even removed a part of his skull so that his brain could expand without injury. He had lost both of his eyes. He would never see again. His wife was finally notified while he was in Frankfort and was able to come to his side although she could hardly recognize him in the myriad of bandages and tubes coming out of body.
Thus started a long recovery process and many times the only thing they could rely on was their faith in the Creator of the Universe who has said to them: "I will never leave you nor forsake you."  But with the help of God and many faithful family members, friends, doctors, nurses, and assorted other organizations they pulled themselves through the physical, mental, and spiritual battles to victory.

A short list of the things that Scotty has been able to accomplish with the help of God and his wife are these: Masters degree in business from Duke University, Leadership professor at West Point, Company Commander, skydiver, mountain climber, surfer, snow skier,  father of two sons, motivational speaker, Army ROTC Instructor at Gonzaga University, and Iron man triathlete! An impressive list of accomplishments, even for someone who has the use of their eyes. (The complete story of this magnificent struggle and the victory that Scotty and Tiffany gained is chronicled in the book: Hope Unseen by Scotty Smiley and Doug Crandall. There are also some youtube videos produced by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association that you can access.)

So again I ask you; what struggles are you going through right now? Are they bigger problems than Scotty and Tiffany were able to overcome with the help of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Look to Him today. Lean on Him. "Casting all your cares upon Him for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

Pray:

1. God help me to look to You today to help me with my struggles, with my pain, with my failures and my sin. Forgive me for not putting everything at your feet so that You might show me the way.
2. Help me to be faithful in praying for others that I know that are going through tough times and they need You as much or more than I do.
3. Help me to start tomorrow off by reading Your Holy Scriptures and spending more time in prayer for my burdens and the burdens of my family and friends.

The Power of Prayer

"I will say of the LORD, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.' Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from perilous pestilence. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor the arrow that flies by day, Nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. (Psalms 91:2-3, 5-7 NKJV)

In the Spring of 2003 the U.S. invaded Iraq and many men and women were placed in harm’s way for several years to come. West Acres Baptist Church that I attend sent some of it’s sons into this conflict also and these men became the object of many prayers lifted up by faithful men and women throughout the congregation. One young man who deployed was my son, Daniel, who was an infantry platoon leader in the 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. He was involved in numerous firefights and raids to capture enemy leaders but after 6 months of action, neither he nor any of his men had been seriously wounded. One Sunday, shortly after Daniel had been given command of the battalion’s scout platoon, I was just entering the church when a lady approached me and asked: “Do you known how Daniel is doing? God woke me up at 2 AM and I had a strong impression to pray for him. Do you know if he is ok?” I could only say that I had not heard anything but that I would try to contact Dan to find out if anything had occurred that night.
Several days later Daniel was able to respond to the email request his father had sent. He was able to verify that at the exact time that the lady had been awakened, he and his platoon had been in serious danger. He described it this way: “We had just entered a small village with our 3 Humvees and we found ourselves in a 'close-in ambush.' There were machine guns and small arms firing at us from both sides of the road. Also the insurgents were firing RPG’s (rocket propelled grenades) at our vehicles. One RPG passed right in front of the windshield of my vehicle and missed by inches. We responded by returning fire in both directions and quickly getting out of the kill zone. Not one of my soldiers was injured in any way!”
Two years later Daniel’s brother, Adam, was deployed to Iraq as a cavalry platoon leader with the 2d Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, of the 4th Infantry Division, attached to the101st Airborne Division. On another Sunday morning history repeated itself as another church member approached me and asked: “Is Adam alright? God woke me up to pray for him at 3 AM this morning.” This time his dad was able to respond with a slight smile. “I don’t know but give me a few days and I will have a good story for you” By Thursday, Adam had responded that he had been in grave danger at the time the prayer warrior had been awakened Sunday morning.

He described the action this way: “My platoon received the mission to check out the report of a possible IED (improvised explosive device) on one of the main roads. We went to the area and cordoned it off so no one could go near and called in the EOD (Explosive Ordinance Demolition, those who diffuse explosive devices). We were told that they were on another mission and would not arrive for 6 hours. Sergeant Poss and I decided we would look a little closer to see if there really was an IED in the road. Initially, we didn’t see anything and then we noticed a small dirt mound in the road. As we approached within 5 yards of the suspected device, it went off. The explosion sent up a huge dust cloud and sent shrapnel (pieces of metal) in all directions. Shrapnel flew 50 yards and hit several of our vehicles and knocked the medic down who was standing by my vehicle. He stood up and started running toward me yelling: ‘ are you alright lieutenant, are you alright?' I checked myself for blood or the feeling of pain and found none. I yelled ‘I’m alright’ and Sergeanty Poss yelled the same. There were two man-sized silhouettes on the road where we both had been standing with shards of steel from the bomb all around them, but not one piece had hit either of us! As we walked away from the scene we both noticed we weren’t even covered with dust!”
The complete story of this incident was covered in the 101st Airborne Division newspaper “The Band of Brothers” and can be found on the internet under; “Soldier survives IED blast from 5ft!” (The IED had been determined to be a 155mm artillery round which has a kill radius of 50 meters.)

Daniel and Adam returned from their tours in Iraq having never been wounded in spite of numerous encounters with possible death or wounding. All of the soldiers in their platoons returned alive. (Several suffered minor wounds). We can attribute this wonderful good fortune to our God and His response to many godly men and women in West Acres, and those of their extended family, that faithfully prayed for these men in their time of need. Are you someone that God can trust to get up at 2AM and pray for someone He has put on your mind?

"More than anything else, prayer enables you to see you own heart and brings you into alignment with God's heart." (Ravi Zacharias, The Grand Weaver.)

Pray that:
1.     God will give you the desire to be one of His faithful prayer warriors and that He will use you in mighty ways to intercede for others.
2.     God will lay on your heart certain individuals who need to be saved and that you will be faithful to pray until He answers that prayer.
3.     You will examine your schedule and see if you can spend more time every day in prayer for those that are going through difficult times.
4.     We as individuals, and as a church, will be more faithful in being obedient to the charge to “pray without ceasing.”

Where is God leading you?

"Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:6,8-9)

When we were living in the Philippines a few years ago, my wife, Miriam, came in contact with a lady who, along with her husband, were missionaries in China. She and her husband were from Great Britain and the husband was at a conference in Manila and she was spending time with another woman that Miriam knew, so they scheduled some time together in our apartment. She told the most amazing story about a woman she had met in a small village in the interior of China and how God had used that woman to advance His Kingdom in that communist country.
The lady the missionary met was in her 80's when she met her and she lived in a small apartment alone. Her story was this: When she was a young girl she had become a Christian and she had asked God to help her live for Him and had told God that she was willing to be used by Him for any task that He decided. Her husband was imprisoned for being a Christian and she was all alone. One day she felt God leading her to leave her small village and go to the nearest seashore that was not too far away.  As she walked along the shoreline she noticed several packages floating in the water and went into the surf to recover one. When she opened it she discovered a Bible written in Chinese! She immediately recovered as many as were in the surf and then went into the village and found some fishermen who had picked some of the packages up also. She was able to easily persuade them to give them to her because they had no interest in Bibles at all.
She returned to her village with over 50 Bibles and hid them in her house. Then she began to pray for God to reveal to her what to do with them. She knew that many Christians, nay, many house churches did not  have a single copy of God's Word and would give all of their belongings to purchase one if there were ever any for sale in a books store. After a time God revealed to her that she should buy a ticket at the train station and go as far as her meager funds would take her. She did that and got off the train at another small village even deeper in the interior of China. She walked from the train station to the center of town with her sack of Bibles and sat down to see what she should do. After a while, watching all the people pass her by, she decided to sing a hymn she had learned in her church. A man walking by stopped and, in a whisper, asked her: "Are you a Christian and why are you singing here in the town square?" She responded. "Do you want any Bibles?"  The man looked left and right and nodded his head vigorously!  She reached into her bag and gave him several and he quickly went on his way. She then repeated the scenario several times until all her Bibles were gone!
She returned home joyously knowing that she had been obedient to what God had called her to do and that many house churches would be blessed by the Bibles she had been able to distribute. She was then able to repeat this  same mission one or two times a year for many years as her small earning allowed and as she was prompted by the Holy Spirit.
God's ways are not our ways. He does things that we do not expect Him to do because He knows so much more about the future and what He wants us to be and do for Him that we usually can't figure it out on our own. We need to be looking and seeking for Him to reveal those little things and big things He wants us to accomplish for Him. And, if we have the same type of obedient spirit that this lady in China had, then He can use us too! If we aren't listening for His guidance or we are not obedient when we get it, then we miss out on His plans for us. Yes, He has plans for you and me. Just read Psalms 139 verses 16 and 17 if you are unsure. Shoot, don't stop there read the whole Psalm. It will bless you today and every other day you read  it.

Pray

1. Thank you Lord that not only do we all have copies of your Word in our homes, we probably have several different translations to choose from.
2. Help me to be faithful to spend time reading the Bible on my own every day so that I can learn more about You and Your plan for my life.
3. Help me to be obedient to those truths You reveal to me in Your Word and to be quick to obey so that You can show me more.
